Joni Ernst is a United States Senator from Iowa, elected in 2014 and sworn in January 2015. She is the first woman to represent Iowa in the U.S. Senate and the first female combat veteran elected to the Senate. Ernst served in the Iowa State Senate from 2011 to 2014 and in the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. Her legislative work focuses on national defense, veterans' issues, and government accountability. She is recognized for her pragmatic approach and advocacy for rural communities.
